The whole time I was reading this excerpt, all I could think about were Nazis and the Holocaust. So of course I was surprised when she mentioned at the end how these experiences reminded HER of the same thing.
I knew that blacks were treated extremely poorly, but I think Moody's account of the march after Medgar Evers' assassination opened my eyes to exactly how bad it was. Not only did they capture and beat the black people participating in the marches, but they included the innocent people calmly observing from their porches (or simply anybody in sight). Filling GARBAGE TRUCKS, or stuffy paddy wagons with black people and turning the heat up on a 100 degree day just to watch them suffer even more? Trashing and (basically) melting people in mass numbers is the Holocaust. Its inhumane and disgusting.
